ATS has been awarded of the contract for the revamping of the FGT unit of the WTE plant in Milan (Silla2)

A2A Ambiente is a company 100% owned by A2A Spa, this is the first operator in Italy with regard to the recovery of materials and energy in WtE plants, in addition they also have implemented high technological process abroad.

Today A2A is

  • among the protagonists in the environmental sector, with about 3 million tons of processed waste
  • at the 1st place among the companies, that had a public joint venture, for many customers and business location
  • at the 1st place in Italy in the district heating sector
  • at the 2nd place in Italy for installed power and sale of electricity
  • at the 3rd place for the amount of natural gas sold

A2A Ambiente owns several energy recovery facilities in the North of Italy in which there is the most innovative technology to increase the production of electrical energy and district heating without increasing emission in the atmosphere.
One of the strengths of this company is the WtE plant known as SILLA2, located in the northwest of the city of Milan, near Figino. The system ensures the best energy recovery from municipal waste of one among the biggest Italian cities, with an high population density, in co-generation between electricity and heat for district heating.

At full load, the plant can produce enough heat to warm over 20,000 families producing hot water that is channeled through underground pipes at high pressure in homes in Gallaratese area and in the new "Fiera Rho-Pero”, and certain public services from neighboring towns connected to the district heating network. Electrical energy can face instead of the annual energy consumption of 130,000 households.
In the design and construction of the plant have been used the most reliable and innovative technologies to ensure the least environmental impact in terms of air emissions, noise, liquid waste and solid waste in full compliance with BAT. Particular attention was given to the adoption of process control systems that aim to keep unchanged the reliable values obtained. Sophisticated emissions analysis systems provide continuous monitoring 24/7 and emissions data are presented, as well as on the website of AMSA, also outside the facility, in order not to hide any data on the impacts of the rejects in the atmosphere.
The plant was awarded in 2003 by the Milan Triennale with the gold medal of Italian architecture for private clients.

The architectural design of the WtE “Silla2" plant

Architectural design, by the firm of Quattroassociati, and the chromatic study, edited by Jorrit Tornquist, paid special attention to the inclusion in the territory of such a big technological system, examining different aspects of coexistence between fragments of farmland, the industrial landscape and infrastructure, and increased development of the system of urban parks, aware that these new locations will represent the quality of the development of the future city.

In recent years A2A Ambiente conducted a series of upgrades to increase the power generated by the facility:

  • The first phase, completed in 2012, enabled the plant to increase the thermal power available to the district heating from 68 to 118 MW, with a co-generation production of electrical power 36 MW, which reduces steam flow to the minimum allowed by the low pressure turbine to power the new Rho-Pero station.
  • The second phase, completed in early 2014, involves the insertion of the self-synchronizing coupling ("clutch") that will allow the production of a thermal power of 134 MW thermal energy, in cogeneration with production of an electric power of 30 MW, fueling improved station in western Milan.
  • The third step is to increase from 15% the heating capacity, mainly because of the difference in quality of waste to be treated without change quantities and without increasing emissions in the atmosphere. The greatest amount of energy recovered is directed mainly to district heating, and only the exceeding part will be transformed into electrical energy.

A2A Ambiente has placed his trust in the hands of Air Treatment System, by entrusting us with the contract for extraordinary maintenance scheduled on the flue gas treatment lines after the third operational phase for the power increase of the installation.

ATS has been awarded of the contract for modifying existing equipment and revamp three FGT lines, particularly the planned interventions will be:

  • a CFD study of the flue gases inside the equipment
  • improvement of mixing between the reactants and pollutants in the dry reactor by increasing turbulence in the section devoted to it
  • expansion of the bag filter
  • increasing the volume of catalyst
  • intervention in the storage, dosage and injection of the reagent used for the NOx section, as the customer has the intention of no longer use urea, but ammonia solution instead
  • implementation of sodium bicarbonate milling system
